Paving The Future Scholarship

A Richard J Schreck Legacy Scholarship

The Paving the Future Scholarship is a Richard J Schreck Legacy Scholarship named in honor of VAA’s retired Executive Vice President of 36 years. Richard was instrumental in developing the scholarship program, and we are proud to award these scholarships in his name. The Richard J Schreck Scholarship was established to assist dependents of VAA member companies in furthering their education beyond high school. Its focus is on students pursuing asphalt, construction or infrastructure-related fields.

This program is managed under the auspices of the NAPA Research and Education Foundation (NAPAREF) Scholarship Program, a 501(c)3 organization. Only dependents/spouses/employees of VAA member companies are eligible to apply. Eligibility includes all incoming freshmen and first-year students at post-high school institutions (e.g., trade schools, colleges, universities). Also, those students currently enrolled in post-high school institutions may apply.

VAA Academic Scholarship & Technical Scholarship

The VAA Academic Scholarship and the VAA Technical Scholarship were established to assist dependents of VAA member companies in furthering their education beyond high school.  This program is managed under the auspices of the NAPA Research and Education Foundation (NAPAREF) Scholarship Program, a 501(c)3 organization.

Only dependents/spouses/employees of VAA member companies are eligible to apply. Eligibility includes all incoming freshmen, first-year attendees at post-high school institutions (i.e. trade schools, colleges, universities). Also, those students currently enrolled in post-high school institutions may apply.

Applications are Closed for 2026

The Virginia Asphalt Association (VAA) and its member companies have established a scholarship to support the education of dependents and employees of VAA members beyond high school. This Scholarship Program is managed under the auspices of the NAPA Research and Education Foundation Scholarship Program, a 501(c) 3 organization. Scholarships are awarded annually, and the number and amounts depend on the total of donations to the VAA Scholarship Program. Scholarships typically awarded range from $2500 to $10,000. Awards are presented to the winners in the summer of each year.

  1. Only VAA and VAA member company employees and dependents may apply for the scholarship.
  2. Former winners are encouraged to apply.
  3. Preference will be given to civil engineering, construction management, construction engineering and construction trades schools. However, all career paths are eligible to apply.
  4. Only incoming students (i.e., Freshmen or first-year students) and students currently enrolled (second, third, or fourth year) in a Post-High School Institution (two or four-year institution) may apply.
  5. Applicants must have graduated from high school, be on track to graduate, or have completed the GED high school equivalency requirements
  6. Applicants must show that they have applied, been accepted, or are enrolled at a Post-High School Institution.
  7. Age will not be part of the criteria.
  8. If necessary, applicants must be willing to be interviewed by the Selection Committee

VAA Paving the Future Scholarship applicants may download the online application at vaasphalt.org or request a paper application at cfahed@vaasphalt.com. Applicants must complete the application and respond to four application questions. Answers may be submitted in writing or via a submitted video. Each application must include:

  1. An application signed by three individuals: a VAA member company representative who is not the applicant’s parent or guardian, the parent or guardian, and the person applying.
  2. Letter of Recommendation from a VAA Member Company Representative who is not the applicant’s parent or guardian.
  3. Letter of Recommendation from their Current School Principal or guidance counselor
  4. Copy of Current School Transcripts

The VAA Scholarship Committee will review and select recipients based on alignment with the construction industry, academic performance, work ethic, leadership, character, community involvement and quality of essay responses. VAA will notify both the winner(s) and non-winner(s) in the Summer of each year.
