Balance Mix Design (BMD) seems to be ever-present today, and most agencies have looked at or are implementing BMD in some form. At first look, BMD seems straightforward, but mix designers know that it calls for much more than just increasing asphalt content. BMD requires improving the cracking resistance of a mix without giving up the rutting resistance. Some designers must open mixes, while others may re-examine aggregate sources. Still, a designer may need more tools to improve the overall mix performance. What if the mix goes out of spec? How do these changes affect my density? What additives are available, and how do they work? All of this assumes that the designer knows how to remove the error of BMD testing.

This webinar will review the BMD basics and address sources of error and what to watch for. The remaining time will be spent discussing how the various factors (AC, PG, dust, etc.) and additives affect rutting, cracking, and density—all to help the designer achieve the needed BMD specification.
