The performance of a pavement is directly related to its structural design. Through experience, enhanced materials, and engineering analysis, a new asphalt pavement can be constructed to perform for 50 or more years with only surface maintenance. By eliminating the need for deeper pavement repairs and by using superior paving materials on the surface, transportation agencies and the traveling public should expect 15 or more years between initial construction and future resurfacing. Fortunately for asphalt pavements, the future resurfacings can be done quickly by removing the old surface and laying a new asphalt surface. This eliminates extensive user delays, returns a road to service in a few hours, and restores the exception functional aspects of asphalt pavements.
